Myth
Legend has it that Aeolus, a Greek prince who ruled a colony on the Aeolian Islands, achieved fame because he could predict the weather from the shape of the vapor clouds rising from an active volcano, probably Stromboli.
The locals were fishermen, and knowledge of the weather was an important part of their daily lives. Thus, over the generations, the ability to predict events was likely confused with the ability to make them happen. It's therefore not surprising that mythology features Aeolus as the God of the Wind. According to Greek mythology, Aeolus, God of the Winds, is the son of Poseidon and Arne, and was entrusted by Zeus with controlling the Winds. Aeolus directed and released them, guarding them in caves and in a wineskin on Lipari, one of the Aeolian Islands, where he had his palace.
The Winds, after having caused great damage, including the detachment of Sicily from the mainland, had to be kept under control. Among them were four brothers who represented the principal Winds: Boreas, the most violent, the North Wind, who for the love of Dardanus' mares transformed himself into a horse and fathered twelve swift-footed foals; Zephyr, the West Wind, gentle and beneficent, heralding spring; Eurus, the East Wind, sometimes stormy and sometimes dry, bringing fair weather; and Austro, the South Wind, extremely hot and a bringer of rain, always depicted as wet.
